Hermitage of Santa Eulàlia de Pomanyons

We are convinced that this is not the first time we have told you about the Hermitage of Santa Eulàlia de Pomanyons, although it will be the first time we have given you a detailed description. Our aim is for you to see it with the same eyes as we do: with a look of admiration!

The Barony of Rialb is a municipality in Lleida with a rich natural and cultural heritage, so there is always something to do. In this case, we suggest that you go to the Dolmen Sols de Riu area, where the most important architectural monuments in the area are located, and visit the hermitage.

What you should know about the Hermitage of Santa Eulàlia de Pomanyons

In order to make your visit to the chapel much more profitable, we are going to give you some information about this architectural work. This way, when you visit, you will be able to become an expert! There’s nothing like a well-prepared excursion.

Santa Eulàlia de Pomanyons is a Romanesque chapel that was built in the 11th century (the first reference to the chapel dates back to 1073). Despite this, the hermitage can still be seen in very good condition today, as it was moved (to ensure its survival when the Rialb reservoir was built) and the opportunity was taken to restore it.

It is a very simple construction with no external decoration, following the main characteristics of the architectural style: it is a hermitage with a single nave, with the typical barrel vault and a semicircular apse. It is also a small building, about 10 metres long and 4.5 metres wide. And despite being such a simple construction, it has still managed to steal a little piece of our hearts.

At the time, the chapel was located next to Mas Pomanyons, an important house that is now submerged in the waters of the reservoir.

Given the information that has been found about the hermitage, it is thought to have been built near what was once a temple (9th or 10th century). It should be borne in mind that at that time, it was the time of the Christian-Muslim conflict, so it is said that the hermitage could have been a fortification used to demonstrate Christian power and control in that territory.

Other places of interest in the area

We have already mentioned the Sols de Riu Dolmen several times in this article, so now we are just going to remind you that it is in the same area and that it would be a waste to miss it. Even so, that’s not all there is to do in the area. In our opinion, you should make the most of the excursion and also visit the Church of Sant Girvés de la Torre de Rialb, the Church of Sant Iscle and Santa Victòria de la Torre de Rialb, which are only 300 metres away from the hermitage.
